Chelation Therapy
Chelation therapy uses medicines that bind to certain metals in the body so they can be removed. FDA-approved chelating drugs are approved for specific uses, such as lead or other heavy-metal poisoning. Use for other purposes is off-label.
Your evaluation
Chelation is considered only after a provider evaluation, which may include testing for metal levels and kidney function. Your provider will explain why it is or isn’t recommended, the evidence and the alternatives.
Possible risks
- Kidney injury, which is why kidney function is checked before and during treatment
- Low calcium levels, which can be serious
- Loss of helpful minerals such as zinc
- Pain or irritation at the IV site, nausea, headache or fatigue
More details to come.
