Light Therapy (Photobiomodulation)
Photobiomodulation, sometimes called red-light or low-level light therapy, uses specific wavelengths of red or near-infrared light applied to the body. NCFM offers light therapy after a provider evaluation. Research is ongoing and results vary.
What research shows so far
- Photobiomodulation is being studied for several uses. Many studies are small or early, and benefits for brain health and aging have not been established. Any FDA clearance applies only to the specific device and the specific use it was cleared for.
- See Current Research for published studies.
Is it right for me?
Your provider reviews your history first. Light therapy may not be appropriate if you are pregnant, take light-sensitizing medicines or have certain eye or skin conditions. Eye protection may be required.
