Bone Density (DEXA)
A DEXA scan uses low-dose X-rays to measure bone density, usually at the hip and spine. NCFM offers DEXA scans in our office, on a GE Healthcare Lunar Prodigy, when your provider orders one.
What a DEXA scan measures
- Bone mineral density, reported as T-scores and Z-scores
- Body composition, if your provider orders it
What to expect
- You lie still on an open table for a few minutes while the scanner arm passes over you.
- The scan is painless and uses a small amount of radiation.
- Tell us if you are or may be pregnant, or have had a recent barium or contrast test.
- Your provider reviews the results with you.
This information is educational and is not a substitute for advice from your physician.

Reading a DEXA report
- BMD (bone mineral density): the measured amount of bone mineral in an area such as the hip or spine, in g/cm².
- T-score: how your BMD compares with a healthy young adult. It is the number usually used to classify bone density.
- Z-score: how your BMD compares with people of your own age and sex.
Your provider explains what your results mean for you.
