The many benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) have been well-documented by the medical and research community, including:

  • Increased oxygen in tissues
  • Enhanced growth of new blood vessels
  • Destruction of harmful bacteria
  • Enhanced ability of white blood cells to fight bacteria and debris in the body
  • Increased growth of cells that form reparative tissue
  • Enhanced metabolic activity

As a result, hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been highly popular among patients of the Naples Center for Functional Medicine. The natural remedy can help those with sports injuries, wounds, diabetic ulcers, rheumatoid arthritis, Lyme disease and many additional illnesses and injuries.

Science Daily, a global science news website, recently published a report based on research findings from the first Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan documenting improvement in brain metabolism in an Alzheimer’s patient being treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

“We demonstrated the largest improvement in brain metabolism of any therapy for Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr. Paul Harch, clinical professor and director of hyperbaric medicine at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine. “HBOT in this patient may be the first treatment not only to halt, but temporarily reverse disease progression in Alzheimer’s disease.”

This research certainly is encouraging, and I’m excited as researchers continue to study the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
